A Timeline of Ebbsfleet’s Remarkable History

c. 400,000 years ago – Swanscombe Skull Site

Early human remains (among the oldest ever found in Britain) were discovered in Swanscombe. The area has long been a home for human settlement.

Late Iron Age – Early 1st century BC

Traces of farming and domestic life appear around Springhead and Northfleet, setting the stage for the Roman period.

1st–3rd centuries AD – Roman Springhead (Vagniacis)

Springhead became a major religious and roadside settlement along Watling Street. Temples, ritual shafts, and sacred springs attract pilgrims, while blacksmiths, bakers, and brewers serve the local population. Nearby, a Roman villa complex emerges at Northfleet.

7th century AD – Saxon Northfleet

Northfleet hosts the earliest recorded tidal water mill in Britain, used for grinding grain, a remarkable example of Saxon engineering. Sunken-featured buildings and farming remains show a thriving community.

19th century – Cement and Chalk Industry

The natural chalk beds support a booming cement industry. Swanscombe Cement Works became one of the first in Britain, making the area a centre of industrial innovation. Deep quarries and riverside wharves define the local landscape and economy.

2007 – Ebbsfleet International Station Opens

With direct high-speed rail links to London and Europe, the station sparks new visions for the area’s regeneration and future growth.

2015 – Ebbsfleet Development Corporation (EDC) Established

The EDC was formed to lead the creation of Ebbsfleet Garden City. This is a major regeneration initiative turning former quarries and industrial land into new, sustainable neighbourhoods.
